{"id":9470,"date":"2026-09-02T06:41:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T06:41:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aboutknowledge.com\/?p=9470"},"modified":"2026-09-02T06:41:02","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T06:41:02","slug":"fmea-spc-and-msa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aboutknowledge.com\/zh\/fmea-spc-and-msa\/","title":{"rendered":"FMEA, SPC and MSA"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Why these three<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Inspection finds defects after they exist.<\/strong> That is expensive \u2014 you have already paid for the material, the labour and the machine time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These three tools work earlier:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FMEA<\/strong> asks what could go wrong, before you start.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPC<\/strong> watches the process while it runs, so you see a problem developing rather than a defect produced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MSA<\/strong> checks that your measurements are trustworthy \u2014 because the other two are worthless if they are not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Required in automotive and aerospace.<\/strong> Useful anywhere with repeated production.<\/p>\n<h2>FMEA \u2014 Failure Mode and Effects Analysis<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A structured way of asking: what could go wrong, how bad would it be, and what are we doing about it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For each step in a process or each part of a design:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What could fail?<\/strong> The failure mode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens if it does?<\/strong> The effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why might it fail?<\/strong> The cause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How likely is it? How serious? Everything else depends on it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>SPC \u2014 Statistical Process Control<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Watching a process while it runs, to see whether it is behaving normally.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The core idea, without the statistics:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Every process varies.<\/strong> Two identical parts are never exactly identical. That is normal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some variation is inherent<\/strong> \u2014 the ordinary noise of the process working correctly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some variation is a signal<\/strong> \u2014 something changed. A tool wearing, a material batch differing, a setting drifting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPC distinguishes the two.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How it works:<\/strong> measure samples as production runs, plot them, and set limits based on how the process normally behaves. Points inside the limits are noise. Points outside, or patterns like a steady drift, are signals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it gives you:<\/strong> a warning before defects. The measurement drifting towards the limit tells you to act while everything is still good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The critical distinction:<\/strong> <strong>control limits come from how the process actually behaves. Same answer?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reproducibility.<\/strong> Different people, same part. Same answer?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bias.<\/strong> Does the instrument read consistently high or low?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stability.<\/strong> Does it stay accurate over time?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it is skipped:<\/strong> it is unglamorous, and it feels like checking something that obviously works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> measurement variation is often a surprisingly large share of the total variation being blamed on the process. <strong>Companies chase process problems that turn out to be gauge problems.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Calibration is not the same thing.<\/strong> Calibration confirms the instrument reads correctly against a reference. MSA checks whether the whole measurement system \u2014 instrument, method, people \u2014 produces consistent results in your actual conditions.<\/p>\n<h2>How they work together<\/h2>\n<p><strong>MSA first.<\/strong> Confirm you can measure reliably. Without this, the other two are built on sand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FMEA next.<\/strong> Work out what could go wrong and where the risk concentrates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPC on what FMEA identified.<\/strong> Control-chart the characteristics that matter, not everything.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That sequence matters.<\/strong> SPC applied to everything is expensive and dilutes attention. It asks for risk-based thinking and process control \u2014 and these are how many organisations satisfy that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which means:<\/strong> if you supply automotive or aerospace, these are not optional. Elsewhere, they are tools you use where they pay.<\/p>\n<h2>Where they pay outside those sectors<\/h2>\n<p><strong>FMEA<\/strong> pays anywhere a process is being designed or changed. The discussion alone is worth the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPC<\/strong> pays where you have repeated production and measurable characteristics. It does not fit low-volume or one-off work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MSA<\/strong> pays wherever measurements drive decisions \u2014 which is more places than people assume.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And a general point:<\/strong> the value of all three is prevention. <strong>Their return is invisible<\/strong>, because it consists of defects that did not happen. That makes them easy to under-invest in and easy to cut.<\/p>\n<h2>Common mistakes<\/h2>\n<p><strong>FMEA done once and filed.<\/strong> It should be revisited when the process changes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FMEA as a paperwork exercise.<\/strong> Scores assigned to satisfy a customer, without the discussion. The discussion is the value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPC charts nobody looks at.<\/strong> Data collected, plotted, filed. If nobody acts on a signal, the collection is waste.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPC on everything.<\/strong> Expensive, and it buries the characteristics that matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Confusing control and specification limits.<\/strong> Covered above, and it leads to both false alarms and missed problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Skipping MSA.<\/strong> Then chasing process variation that was measurement variation all along.<\/p>\n<h2>The short version<\/h2>\n<p><strong>FMEA<\/strong> asks what could go wrong before you start. The discussion is the value, not the score.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPC<\/strong> watches the process while it runs and distinguishes normal variation from a signal that something changed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MSA<\/strong> checks your measurements are trustworthy \u2014 and everything else depends on it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do MSA first, FMEA next, and SPC on what FMEA identified.<\/strong> Applying SPC to everything costs more and finds less.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-left:4px solid #5C3A52;background:#F7F3F6;padding:18px 22px;margin:28px 0;border-radius:0 6px 6px 0;\">\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 6px;font-weight:700;color:#5C3A52;font-size:16px;\">Chasing quality problems that keep coming back?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;color:#5a5a5a;\">Get in touch.
