So does one producing an adequate product reliably but unable to prove how.<\/p>\n<h2>The problem it solves<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Good work that depends on particular people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your best technician does the job properly. The new one does it differently. Neither wrote anything down, so nobody can say which is right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then something goes wrong<\/strong>, and the questions start.<\/p>\n<p>What was supposed to happen? Did it? Who checked? Has this happened before? Large buyers, automotive, aerospace, medical and government contracts routinely require certification. <strong>No certificate, no tender.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Regulation requires it.<\/strong> Medical devices, food, aviation. Not optional.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because it works.<\/strong> Fewer defects, less rework, less firefighting, and problems that get fixed rather than recurring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Companies that start for the first reason often end up valuing the third<\/strong> \u2014 but only if they treat it as a system rather than as paperwork for an auditor.<\/p>\n<h2>PDCA<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The idea underneath most of quality management<\/strong>, and it is simple.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plan.<\/strong> Decide what you are going to do and how you will know it worked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do.<\/strong> Do it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check.<\/strong> Did it work? Measure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Act.<\/strong> Keep what worked. Change what did not. Did it work?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"flex:1 1 200px;min-width:200px;background:#fff;border:1px solid #e6e6e6;border-radius:5px;padding:14px 16px;\">\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 8px;font-weight:700;color:#5C3A52;font-size:14px;\">Act<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin:0;padding-left:18px;color:#5a5a5a;font-size:13px;line-height:1.6;\">\n<li>Keep, change, and plan again<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Risk-based thinking<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The other central idea, and a change from how quality used to work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The old approach:<\/strong> inspect everything, catch defects at the end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The current approach:<\/strong> work out what could go wrong, and put effort where the risk is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Practically:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Identify what could go wrong<\/strong> in each process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Judge how likely and how serious.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Put controls where they matter<\/strong> \u2014 heavy checks on the high-risk steps, light ones elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why this matters commercially:<\/strong> inspecting everything equally is expensive and it still misses things. Concentrating effort where failure is likely and costly is cheaper and more effective.<\/p>\n<h2>The vocabulary<\/h2>\n<p>Terms you will meet, in plain words.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nonconformity.<\/strong> Something that did not meet a requirement. A defect, a missed step, a document that should exist and does not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Corrective action.<\/strong> Fixing the cause so it does not happen again. <strong>Not the same as fixing the instance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Root cause.<\/strong> Why it really happened, rather than what visibly failed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Audit.<\/strong> A check that things are being done as documented. Internal, or by a customer, or by a certification body.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CAPA.<\/strong> Corrective and Preventive Action \u2014 the process for handling nonconformities properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Continuous improvement.<\/strong> Making small changes repeatedly rather than large ones occasionally.<\/p>\n<h2>The distinction that matters most<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fixing the instance is not corrective action.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A part was wrong, so you replaced it. <strong>That is containment.<\/strong> Necessary, and it is not the job finished.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Corrective action asks why the wrong part got through<\/strong>, and changes something so it does not happen again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most companies stop at containment<\/strong>, which is why the same problems recur for years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The test:<\/strong> if the same situation arose tomorrow, would the outcome be different? It is evidence the audit is not looking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Containment instead of correction.<\/strong> Covered above, and it is the most expensive habit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Certification as the goal.<\/strong> The certificate is evidence of a working system. Pursuing the certificate without the system produces expensive paperwork.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nobody senior involved.<\/strong> Management review exists in every standard for a reason. A quality system nobody senior reads becomes an administrative exercise.<\/p>\n<h2>Where to start<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If you are starting from nothing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Write down what you actually do.<\/strong> Not what you should do. What happens now, including the exceptions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Find where it goes wrong.<\/strong> Ask the people doing the work \u2014 they know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Record nonconformities.<\/strong> Even informally. You cannot improve what you do not measure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Root-cause the recurring ones.<\/strong> Start with whatever happens most often.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Then consider a standard<\/strong>, if a customer needs it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doing it in that order produces a system that works.<\/strong> Starting with the standard produces documentation.<\/p>\n<h2>The short version<\/h2>\n<p>Quality management is <strong>making good work repeatable and provable<\/strong>, rather than dependent on who is doing it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PDCA<\/strong> is the cycle underneath it \u2014 and Check and Act are where most companies fall short.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risk-based thinking<\/strong> means putting effort where failure is likely and costly, rather than inspecting everything equally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And fixing the instance is not corrective action.<\/strong> If the same situation would produce the same outcome tomorrow, nothing has been corrected.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-left:4px solid #5C3A52;background:#F7F3F6;padding:18px 22px;margin:28px 0;border-radius:0 6px 6px 0;\">\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 6px;font-weight:700;color:#5C3A52;font-size:16px;\">Same problems recurring despite fixing them each time?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;color:#5a5a5a;\">Get in touch.
