Community<\/strong> is free, open source, and covers the core of running a business.<\/p>\n Enterprise<\/strong> is paid, adds a set of important apps and features, and comes with hosting, support and upgrade help.<\/p>\n Most businesses that are serious about accounting end up on Enterprise. Many smaller and technically capable teams do very well on Community. The rest of this article explains how to tell which group you are in.<\/p>\n This is the part people get wrong most often.<\/p>\n Enterprise is not a different product<\/strong>. It is Community with extra modules layered on top. Same database, same framework, same interface.<\/p>\n That matters for two reasons.<\/p>\n You can start on Community and move to Enterprise later without a migration project. Your data stays where it is. Your custom modules keep working.<\/p>\n And you are not making a permanent decision today. Getting this choice slightly wrong is recoverable.<\/p>\n FIGURE 1: WHAT EACH EDITION COVERS<\/p>\n Community (free, open source)<\/p>\n Enterprise (paid, per user)<\/p>\n Community covers more than people expect:<\/p>\n For a trading company, a small manufacturer or a services firm, this is a complete operational system. It is free, and you can host it yourself on a modest server.<\/p>\n The additions fall into four groups.<\/p>\n Full accounting.<\/strong> This is the big one. Community gives you invoicing. Enterprise gives you accounting \u2014 bank statement synchronisation, automatic reconciliation, asset management, deferred revenue, budgets, analytic accounting and localised tax reports for most countries. If your accountant needs to close books properly, this is where the line is drawn.<\/p>\n Extra apps.<\/strong> Quality management, PLM, Field Service, Helpdesk, Marketing Automation, Subscriptions, Rental, Appraisals, Recruitment, Planning, Sign, Documents and more.<\/p>\n Better tools.<\/strong> Odoo Studio<\/strong> lets non-developers add fields and change screens without code. There is a proper mobile app, advanced dashboards, and a spreadsheet tool that reads live data.<\/p>\n Service.<\/strong> Hosting on Odoo Online or Odoo.sh, technical support, and \u2014 importantly \u2014 help with version upgrades<\/strong>. Odoo releases a new version every year, and upgrading a customised system is real work.<\/p>\n Ask these five questions.<\/p>\n 1. Do you need real accounting, or is invoicing enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n If you send invoices and your accountant handles the books in their own software, Community works. If you want the books inside Odoo, with bank feeds, reconciliation and statutory reports, you need Enterprise. This single question settles the decision for most companies.<\/p>\n 2. Who will maintain the system?<\/strong><\/p>\n Community means you own the hosting, the backups, the security updates and the upgrades. If you have a technical person or a partner on retainer, fine. If nobody in your company can restart a server, Enterprise hosting is worth its price.<\/p>\n 3. Do you need any of the Enterprise-only apps?<\/strong><\/p>\n Field Service, Quality, Helpdesk, Subscriptions, Marketing Automation. If one of these is central to how you operate, the decision is made.<\/p>\n 4. How many users will you have?<\/strong><\/p>\n Enterprise is priced per user. At five users the annual cost is modest. At a hundred, it is a real budget line that deserves proper comparison against the cost of self-hosting and self-supporting Community.<\/p>\n 5. How important are yearly upgrades?<\/strong><\/p>\n Odoo releases a new version every year and supports each one for about three years. On Community, upgrading a customised system is your problem. On Enterprise, Odoo helps. Companies that have done one difficult upgrade alone rarely want to repeat it.<\/p>\n The most expensive mistake is not choosing wrong. It is choosing Community to save money<\/strong>, then spending far more than the licence would have cost on server administration, failed upgrades and emergency fixes.<\/p>\n Community is genuinely free as software. It is not free to run. Add up hosting, backups, monitoring, security patching and someone’s time, and then compare honestly.<\/p>\n The reverse mistake also happens: paying for Enterprise and using only the apps Community already had. If that is you, you are paying for hosting and support, which may still be worth it \u2014 but know that is what you are buying.<\/p>\n Choose Community if:<\/strong> you have technical capability in-house or a reliable partner, your accountant works outside Odoo, you need only the core apps, and you are comfortable owning the infrastructure.<\/p>\n Choose Enterprise if:<\/strong> you want accounting inside Odoo, you need any Enterprise-only app, you have no server administrator, or you want somebody to answer the phone when something breaks.<\/p>\n Still unsure?<\/strong> Start on Community, run it properly for six months, and see where it stops meeting your needs.
